Shank and compatibility between DTH bit and hammer
Why the wrong shank stops the job and how to check bit and hammer before shipping.
The shank is the mechanical interface between hammer and bit. If it does not match, it will not fit, or it will fit badly and wear out in a few hours. It is one of the most expensive supply mistakes on a DTH line.
Trade names (DHD3.5, QL50, MC81 and similar) identify interface families, not a single part. Two products with a similar label can differ in splines, foot valve or bit range. You need the data sheet, not only the catalogue name.
In the request always state: hammer model if known, declared shank, desired bit diameter, foot valve yes or no. If you do not know the shank, a readable photo of the bit or backhead helps more than a vague description.
On our site the comparator shows shanks linked to loaded hammers. It does not replace a final check on the real part, but it cuts back-and-forth before logistics.
If you are only replacing the bit, bring data for the hammer in use. If you are changing the hammer, bring the bits that stay in stock. Compatibility is built on the parts park, not on a single isolated item.
