How to choose a DTH hammer for water wells

Diameter, pressure, shank and bit range: what to read on the data sheet before ordering a DTH hammer.

A DTH hammer is not chosen by nominal diameter alone. On site what matters is available operating pressure, bit shank, piston weight and compatible bit range. If one of those does not line up, the part arrives and does not work.

Start from geology and depth. Hard rock and deep holes often need a heavier hammer and stable pressure. In mixed formations it matters more to keep the bit inside the right range without pushing air past the compressor limits.

Always check the shank. Hammer and bit must share the same interface. DHD, QL or MC are not interchangeable by habit: verify them on the data sheet or a compatibility table, like the one in our comparator.

Bit range (min and max in mm) stops you fitting a tip that is too narrow or too wide. Outside range you get more vibration, wear and risk of backhead damage.

Before ordering, note: hammer outside diameter, min/max pressure, shank, bit range, foot valve if relevant, weight if handling matters. With those fields a quote request is already usable.
